This is a beautiful story
about a frail little girl searching for her “missing” mother. Living with an
aging grandfather who uses books as fire kindling, Eliza befriends a butterfly
that flies in her window. Eliza misses the stories her mother used to read to
her, so she begins to read to her new friend.
After a few days, they set off to find her mother in the redwood forest near her grandfather’s home. Eliza finds new friends in the forest, who want to accompany her on her quest.
The author has woven beautiful vocabulary and sentence structure into this story—such a pleasure to read. It was so fun to meet the animals and insects, each with their own special language and gifts. From the owl to the deer to the bear, each and every one of them was kind and helpful to Eliza in a way only they could be. There was a continuing theme of a mother’s love throughout the book—Eliza found lots of mothers to help her, as she searched for her own. At the end of the book, she finds what she is searching for, although perhaps a little differently than the reader might imagine.

Hmmm, so is this a children's book? You didn't mention that thus I asked.
ReplyDeleteYou remind me of an old friend. His parents retired early, sold everything, bought a cool RV, and hit the road. Now that I thjink of it, I never heard if they returned to their homebase of California.
That must be a great way to live!
