First update from Saco, Maine

We are in Maine at last. Actually, we have been here for two weeks now and it is wonderful! Not only do we like the area (literally minutes from the Atlantic), but the owners of the campground are awesome and have hired a great group of workampers. Unlike our experience last summer, and to quote a workamping friend, “There are nice people to work for!” This should be a fun, albeit very busy summer.

Today is the opening day at the Saco/Old Orchard Beach KOA camping season. We have Wednesday & Thursday off this week so we are heading to New Hampshire today. It Is only about 30 miles south of our location. As we were exiting the campground, we saw the first official camper of the season turn down the entrance! It was a huge motorhome with a large trailer towing behind. They were obviously part of the 13-14 rig square dance group that we are expecting, and we assume the trailer is housing a lot of square dancing supplies.

Well, it is now Saturday evening … quite an interruption, but we had a wonderful day Thursday. We ended up joining a tour group at Fort Constitution in New Castle, NH near Portsmouth. We were able to go up into a beautiful lighthouse, which has quite an interesting history … too much to go into here. Anyway, we got some great pictures of the lighthouse, the Atlantic Ocean, etc.

We also took about 1/2 hour to visit the DeLorme "Map Store" in Yarmouth, just north of Portland.  Of course they have just about every map imaginable ... we even found United States placemats. We have been looking for a couple of placemats like that since we left California. Needless to say, they are now gracing our table in our 5th wheel trailer.

Changing the subject slightly, one of the things we have been looking forward to was trying the famed Maine lobster and of course, the local New England Clam Chowder. Wayne has never been all that impressed with lobster, as he has considered it simply a tasteless, rubbery piece of seafood. That has all changed with a simple lobster roll from Becky's Diner in Portland, Maine. Up to that point, we have both had lobster at some very nice restaurants in the Bay Area in California. None of them could even hold a candle to the lobster we experienced here! It just practically melts in your mouth. Wayne's first comment? "Ok, I am a fan of lobster", he said! And the clam chowder ... to die for. It is different here, and they claim their way is the "right" way. This soup is MUCH thinner here, but chock full of very tender chunks of clams. Way too good!

Okay, that's enough for now. I am falling asleep and I must get up early in the morning. Night all ... {yawn}
