Most people don't like mud, but we can honestly say now that we absolutely hate mud! Oh my word! We left the company yard in Carrizo Springs this morning around 7:30 a.m. and moved to the Schwope Ranch which is northwest of Cotulla, TX on FM 469. It started out rainy/drizzly, and it has been rainy/drizzly all day. The drive wasn't bad ... right up to the point where we turned onto FM 469 off of FM 468, at which time our back set of stairs was demolished when we went up a small incline. Wayne took it s.l.o.w. but to no avail. Then to complicate matters, we turned off FM 469 onto a dirt road and drove about a mile to the gate. That mile was composed completely of deep, soft, sticky, red Texas mud and puddles. Our GGS boss, Roger, was in front of us and kept slowing down because he was sliding around in the mud. Meanwhile, Sue was almost screaming at him from inside our truck, "Don't stop! Keep going! We will get stuck!" Now of course, he couldn't hear her, but in all seriousness, we HAD to keep the momentum going! Our truck was sliding, our trailer was slipping and sliding behind us ... absolutely NOT FUN! Both the truck and 5th wheel are covered in mud! See?!
Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer, although still rainy. Wednesday is supposed to be 80 degrees or more and sunny ... ahhhhhh ... we are looking forward to that. But then the storms are supposed to come back on Thursday and Friday. Who knows about the weekend. Yuck! This gate is actually in a nice location and we would really enjoy it, EXCEPT FOR THIS AWFUL MUD! Gate guarding isn't really hard, but the rain and mud make it miserable.
Okay, okay ... must stop complaining ... breathe ... whew ... breathe ....
Right, so I have no idea if this will be helpful or not, but we have to deal with mud during this time of year too. I saw something at Lowe's yesterday that may be helpful to you. It's a self-adhesive clear plastic runner. Stick it down, then pull it up in a week when the work is over. I'll bet it's even mop-able. It was in the paint dept.

Oh Sue - I do know just what you mean. Did you know that caliche is an ingredient in cement?!?
ReplyDeleteWhen we were in Tilden on a hunting ranch, we had to keep the giant gate closed at all times. It was last December/January and there'd been a good bit of rain. The mud literally sucked our shoes off! H & I are both kind of neat freaks. We did use plastic runners and lots of area rugs, but I think the sheet idea is probably the simplest.
I'd wished I'd brought Crocks so I'd at least have something easy to get in and out of. Hopefully you won't have much night traffic!
We use those plastic runners on our floor too. Walmart has them (in a roll) in the rug dept. We also keep a towel at the door, where we have to stop and get our feet wiped when we come in.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely go with some kind of slip on shoe when it's muddy, solid rubber crocs are good.
